PolarScreens' autostereoscopic holographic display utilizes a novel 180Hz tri-phase patterned light generator to provide comfortable glasses-free viewing of virtual objects. The display combines the 180 Hz patterned backlight with a 180Hz LCD panel and a head tracking system. This results in the user seeing the full display resolution in each eye with complete freedom of movement. Our technology takes advantage of the fact that in general, the left and the right images of a stereo video are highly similar. By decomposing the video in 3 fields: a common field, a left-right delta and right-left delta, and displaying the common field during full backlight and the delta fields only during alternating vertical patterned strip, the result is a more comfortable viewer experience with minimal flickering caused by the alternating strips.

PolarScreen adaptable backlight technology
Most autostereoscopic displays, such as those using lenticular lenses, have a reduced resolution in order to provide multiple views. The resulting sweet spots give the user the impression of freedom of position. In contrast, PolarScreens' display technology provides the full resolution of the LCD panel to the user and the user is free to move in any direction, even back and forth. Our head tracking system constantly monitors the location of the viewer and adjusts all the parameters of the display to provide the best three dimensional VR image.

The encoding of 2D or 3D information is done on the display itself and can be controlled dynamically. That allows the system to switch between 3D and 2D in frame refresh time i.e. 1/60th of a second. Because any 2D information displayed is unaffected by the barrier, the system can switch to 2D as soon as it loses eye tracking, detects unacceptable head tilting (preventing bad stereo) or when the viewer moves out of the acceptable viewing range (too close, too far on the side, etc.). This guarantees a comfortable user experience without crosstalk, reverse stereo or vertical parallax. Each and every pixel location on the display can display 2D information or 3D as needed, allowing precise windowing of 3D content.
